All law students are welcome to virtually attend any of the following workshops. Each online presentation becomes available every Monday in the Research Center's Canvas page.  We suggest everyone wishing to attend to register so we can easily contact you with information about the workshops.

Available week of JAN 16  FLORIDA LEGISLATIVE HISTORY

 Have you ever wondered where a law comes from? Then look no further than its legislative history. From staff analysis to committee reports, these important government documents comprise a statute’s process through the Florida legislature, and you will learn how to find them all!

Instructor MARGARET CLARK

Access to foreign law varies from one jurisdiction to another. This workshop will explore basic go-to strategies and high-quality resources for locating the laws of countries other than the U.S.

Available week of JAN 30  ARE YOU ORIGINAL? PREEMPTION CHECKING

Instructor BRITT HUNTER

In legal and scholarly writing, it is vital to be original! Your time is valuable, so don’t waste it researching and writing on a topic that has already been covered completely in a published work. This workshop will demonstrate tips and strategies for preemption checking, the process of determining if your paper topic has already been published. By mastering this step of the writing process, you’ll ensure that your ideas are new and worth exploring.

Instructor AMY LIPFORD

Learn what standards the government uses to disclose or withhold documents from the public.  This workshop will present useful guidelines and procedures for requesting federal and Florida records.

You can’t always guess what your first research assignment will be when you start work, but there are steps you can take to prepare for anything your boss might throw at you. This workshop will focus on the very first steps to take when you receive any kind of research assignment, including a checklist of the right questions to ask before you start and how to solicit feedback to improve your work in the future.
