Introduction to Bankruptcy Research

The U.S. Courts website, found below, gives a good general introduction to bankruptcy law. Essentially bankruptcy is the federal mechanism that allows debtors to be discharged from their obligations to obtain a financial fresh start. It is codified in title 11 of the U.S. Code. This should not be confused with Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is a type of bankruptcy found within the title.
