Research Center Workshops: Summer 2023 Workshops

OVERVIEW

The pre-recorded research workshops below were offered in both Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 of this past academic year.  All 20 workshops are being offered again during the Summer Semester from May 8th to June 25th.        

RESEARCH CERTIFICATE PROGRAM                        

  • To receive attendance credit and earn Certificates of Expertise in various categories, students must (1) watch the presentation in its entirety, and (2) complete a short quiz.
  • Virtually attend 6 workshops within an area of expertise to earn a certificate. The expertise areas include Advanced Searching TechniquesPractice-Ready Research, and Specialized Legal Resources.                                        
  • Only Certificates in an Area of Expertise will be awarded in the Summer term; no General Certificates (Bronze, Silver, or Gold) will be awarded during the Summer session. 
  • All quizzes must be completed by midnight 11:59pm on June 30th.

POWER SEARCHING

Instructor MARGARET CLARK

To reap the benefits of the powerful legal information brokers like Lexis and Westlaw, you’ll need to become a proficient and confident user of these tools. This workshop will provide pointers on identifying relevant search terms, using logical connectors, and constructing successful searches. Earns credit for Advanced Search Techniques certificate.  


LEARNING & RELEARNING LEXIS+

Instructor DYLAN DUNN

Learn the finer points of researching on Lexis by using tools like Boolean operators, proximity searching, and wildcards. We'll also touch on what has and hasn't changed in the recent update to Lexis+. Earns credit for both the Advanced Searching and the Specialized Resources certificates. 


BLOOMBERG REFRESHER

Instructor KATIE CRANDALL

Learn all of the basics in just 30 minutes! From practice tools to business intelligence, docket searches to legal analysis, Bloomberg Law has it all. This workshop will introduce you to Bloomberg and how to best navigate the platform’s many resources. Credit for both Advanced Searching and Specialized Resources certificates. Earns credit for both the Advanced Searching and the Specialized Resources certificates. 


WESTLAW REFRESHER

Instructor AMY LIPFORD

Westlaw is more than a legal database that catalogs cases and statutes. From its well-known citator, KeyCite, that helps distinguish between good and bad law to its statute comparison software, Westlaw’s powerful AI features can give you the edge in legal research. Watch this presentation to explore Westlaw’s extensive legal search capabilities. Credit for both the Advanced Searching and the Specialized Resources certificates.  Earns credit for both the Advanced Searching and the Specialized Resources. 


PDFs FOR LAWYERS

Instructor DYLAN DUNN

PDFs are the go-to standard for electronic document sharing. You've undoubtedly used them countless times by now, but how much do you know about their ins and outs? Though PDFs are simple by design, there are quite a few ways to work with them that you might not know about. From editing to encryption to character recognition to format conversion, there are plenty of PDF tools that will come in handy for law school, internships, and your future legal career.  Earns credit for both Legal Technology and Practice-Ready Research certificates.  


ONE-GOOD-CASE RESEARCH STRATEGY

Instructor KATIE MILLER

Learn how to expand your research from one good case to find other relevant resources. This workshop is great for those students writing an open memo or students who will be working as a law clerk and want to learn efficient case law research techniques.  Earns credit for both the Advanced Searching and the Practice-Ready certificates.


TECH TOOLS FOR WRITING

Legal writing is one of the most common activities in legal practice. In this presentation, you’ll go beyond basic spell check by exploring legal writing tools that will aid your writing process and increase your productivity.  Earns credit for Legal Tech certificate.


KEEPING UP WITH LEGAL NEWS

The law is constantly changing, so practitioners and legal academics must stay current on cases, legislation, and other legal developments relevant to their area of research or practice. This workshop will identify specialized resources for keeping up with the hottest issues and new developments in your area of interest. Earns credit for both Advanced Searching Techniques and Specialized Resources.


BLUEBOOKING, Halloween Edition

Instructor KAT KLEPFORD

This primer will help you make sense out of the basic organization and rules found in The Bluebook. Don’t miss out how you can easily locate and apply them for your legal writing needs.  Earns credit for both Practice-Ready and Specialized Resources certificates. 


FEDERAL LEGISLATIVE HISTORY

Instructor BRITT HUNTER

Learn about the federal legislative documents often used by attorneys and courts in determining intent or clarifying vague statutory language.  This session will explore various tools for locating compiled histories and specific documents. FLORIDA LEGISLATIVE HISTORY

 Have you ever wondered where a law comes from? Then look no further than its legislative history. From staff analysis to committee reports, these important government documents comprise a statute’s process through the Florida legislature, and you will learn how to find them all!  Earns credit for Florida Research & Practice-ready Research certificates


FOREIGN LAW RESEARCH

Instructor MARGARET CLARK

Access to foreign law varies from one jurisdiction to another. This workshop will explore basic go-to strategies and high-quality resources for locating the laws of countries other than the U.S.  Earns credit for both the Practice-ready Research certificate


ARE YOU ORIGINAL? PREEMPTION CHECKING

Instructor BRITT HUNTER

In legal and scholarly writing, it is vital to be original! Your time is valuable, so don’t waste it researching and writing on a topic that has already been covered completely in a published work. This workshop will demonstrate tips and strategies for preemption checking, the process of determining if your paper topic has already been published. By mastering this step of the writing process, you’ll ensure that your ideas are new and worth exploring.  Earns credit for both the Advanced Searching Techniques certificate. 


RESEARCHING PUBLIC RECORDS

Instructor AMY LIPFORD

Learn what standards the government uses to disclose or withhold documents from the public.  This workshop will present useful guidelines and procedures for requesting federal and Florida records. Earns credit for the Advanced Searching, Practice-Ready, and the Specialized Resources certificates. 


PRACTICAL IMMIGRATION LAW RESEARCH

CONSTITUTIONAL LAW RESEARCH

INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN INDIAN LAW

This workshop covers basic legal concepts and research resources for the foundation of federal Indian law and tribal law in the United States. The materials covered will enhance your understanding and research skills in this unique and complex area. Earns credit for Practice-Ready Research certificate.


GETTING YOUR FIRST ASSIGNMENT

Instructor KAT KLEPFER

You can’t always guess what your first research assignment will be when you start work, but there are steps you can take to prepare for anything your boss might throw at you. This workshop will focus on the very first steps to take when you receive any kind of research assignment, including a checklist of the right questions to ask before you start and how to solicit feedback to improve your work in the future. Earns credit for Practice-Ready Research certificate.
