Overview

OVERVIEW

The pre-recorded research workshops below were offered in both Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 of this past academic year.  All 20 workshops are being offered again during the Summer Semester from May 7th to June 25th.        

RESEARCH CERTIFICATE PROGRAM                        

  • To receive attendance credit and earn certificates of expertise in various categories, students must (1) watch the presentation in its entirety, and (2) complete a short quiz.
  • Virtually attend 6 workshops within an area of expertise to earn a certificate. The expertise areas include Advanced Searching TechniquesFlorida Legal ResearchLegal TechnologyPractice-Ready Research, and Specialized Legal Resources.                                        
  • Only Certificates in an Area of Expertise will be awarded in the Summer term; no General Certificates (Bronze, Silver, or Gold) will be awarded during the Summer session.                                         
  • All quizzes must be completed by midnight 11:59pm on June 25th.

Summer Workshops

WORKSHOPS

 

1. WEST ACADEMIC STUDY AIDS DIGITAL COLLECTION        

Want to succeed in law school? This digital collection of easy-to-access to hornbooks, nutshells, and others, covers virtually every law school course you will take, including first-year subjects like Torts, Contracts, Civil Procedure, and Criminal Law. Learn how to access, create your individual account, and make  studying much easier. Credit for Specialized Resources certificate.

 

2. QUIMBEE    

Quimbee, a popular law school study aid on the web, provides expert-written case briefs, outlines, video tutorials, and practice questions with answers explanations.  Learn how to access, create your individual account, and make studying more productive. Credit for Specialized Resources certificate.

 

3. POWERNOTES    

PowerNotes, a productivity tool freely available to all FSU law students, allows you to track your research and writing more productively.  Learn how to efficiently gather, organize, and track your internet research for any writing assignment. This presentation will focus on helping you get started and provide tips on the best ways to use it. Credit for both Legal Technology and Specialized Resources certificates. 

 

4. CALI: Computer Assisted Legal Instruction    

This platform is well-know for its great collection of interactive lessons written by law professors covering over 30 legal topics, including all first-year courses. Learn about these and all their other online books and resources.  Credit for Specialized Resources certificate.

 

5. POWER SEARCHING                

Instructor MARGARET CLARK

To reap the benefits of the powerful legal information brokers like Lexis and Westlaw, you’ll need to become a proficient and confident user of these tools. This workshop will provide pointers on identifying relevant search terms, using logical connectors, and constructing successful searches.  Credit for Advanced Search Techniques certificate.

6. FEDERAL LEGISLATIVE HISTORY    

Instructor DYLAN DUNN

Learn about the federal legislative documents often used by attorneys and courts in determining intent or clarifying vague statutory language.  This session will explore various tools for locating compiled histories and specific documents. Quiz due by Oct. 12 @ 8am. Credit for Practice-Ready Research certificate.

7. FLORIDA LEGISLATIVE HISTORY  

Instructor KATIE MILLER    

Have you ever wondered where a law comes from? Then look no further than its legislative history. From staff analysis to committee reports, these important government documents comprise a statute’s process through the Florida legislature and you will learn how to find them all!  Credit for both Florida Research and Practice-Ready Research certificates.

8. FLORIDA SECONDARY SOURCES

Start any research of Florida law by consulting secondary authorities.  By making good use of secondary sources, you lower the risk of missing important primary authorities and increase your efficiency by not looking for information that has already been compiled. Learn about these time-saving, principle secondary sources you are likely to use in the practice of Florida law.  Credit for Florida Research, Practice-Ready Research, and Specialized Resources certificates.

9. BLUEBOOKING BASICS            

Instructor KAT KLEPFER

This primer will help you make sense out of the basic organization and rules found in The Bluebook. Don’t miss out how you can easily locate and apply them for your legal writing needs. Credit for both Specialized Resources and Practice-Ready Research certificates.

10. MAXIMIZING PDFs            

 Instructor QUINTERRION WAITS

A PDF is more than a fixed document sharing format. This workshop will teach you how to maximize your use of PDFs: from converting a MS Word document to a PDF to sending secure PDF files. Credit for Legal Technology certificate.

11. WESTLAW            

Instructor QUINTERRION WAITS

Westlaw is more than a legal database that catalogs cases and statutes. From its well-known citator, KeyCite, that helps distinguish between good and bad law to its statute comparison software, Westlaw’s powerful AI features can give you the edge in legal research. Watch this presentation to explore Westlaw’s extensive legal search capabilities. Credit for both the Advanced Searching and the Specialized Resources certificates.

12. ADVANCED GOOGLE SEARCH TECHNIQUES

Unless you’re a tech geek, you probably use Google in its simplest way. In this online presentation, you will learn a few techniques that will bring your research to another level. Learn how to dig deeper quickly for better results. Credit for both the Advanced Searching and the Specialized Resources certificates.

13. TECH-SAVVY LAWYERING SERIES: Essential MS Office Skills

Learn how to save yourself time and frustration by becoming a Word and Excel power user. You’ll learn some quick tips you can implement today and be introduced to a national legal technology skills certificate you can earn! Credit for Legal Technology certificate.

14. MUNICIPAL LAWS

You might know that municipal laws govern a lot of everyday things like pets, parking, and curfews. But did you know that they often aren’t available on Westlaw or Lexis? Discover where you can research these city and county ordinances for free! Credit for both Florida Research and Practice Ready certificates.

15. LEARNING (AND RELEARNING) LEXIS+            

Instructor DYLAN DUNN

Learn the finer points of researching on Lexis by using tools like Boolean operators, proximity searching, and wildcards. We'll also touch on what has and hasn't changed in the recent update to Lexis+. Credit for both the Advanced Searching and the Specialized Resources certificates.

16. TECH-SAVVY LAWYERING SERIES: Ethics, Security, and Privacy (oh my!)                        

Instructor ELIZABETH FARRELL CLIFFORD

Ethics rules require that lawyers provide competent representation to a client. Did you know that most state bars now require lawyers to be technologically competent as well? You’ll learn what this rule means for lawyers and how you can become more tech-savvy to help protect yourself and your clients. Credit for Legal Technology certificate.

17. INTRODUCING BLOOMBERG LAW

Learn all of the basics in just 30 minutes! From practice tools to business intelligence, docket searches to legal analysis, Bloomberg Law has it all. This workshop will introduce you to Bloomberg and how to best navigate the platform’s many resources. Credit for both Advanced Searching and Specialized Resources certificates.

18.  FLORIDA RULES AND RULINGS IN ADMINISTRATIVE LAW            

Instructor KAT KLEPFER

Learn how to locate sources for Florida’s administrative rule-making process and the decisions made by administrative agencies based on those rules. This workshop will focus on free resources available online. Credit for both Florida Research and Practice Ready certificates.

19. TECH-SAVVY LAWYERING SERIES: Online Presentation Skills            

Instructor ELIZABETH FARRELL CLIFFORD

Effective presentation skills are critical for lawyers – in the courtroom, boardroom, and now on Zoom! Learn how to effectively use PowerPoint to organize, communicate, and persuade your audience. You’ll also learn the fundamentals of how to put together polished and effective online presentations. Credit for Legal Technology certificate.

20. SUMMER IN THE CITY

Working over the summer and confused about what resources you can use? Want to find cost-effective substitutes for research materials you need? Virtually attend this workshop to get a better understanding of how and when to use resources for your summer job or internship.
