Although often grouped with the Caribbean Islands, Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory located in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of United States. It is the oldest British colony still under control of the UK, administered by a Governor appointed by the Queen. The Premier--generally the leader of the ruling parliament majority--heads the British-inspired bicameral parliament, made up of an appointed Senate and the elected House of Assembly. It is among the oldest legislatures in the world, having run since 1620. The judiciary closely mirrors that of the UK, with a Supreme Court and Court of Appeals under the Privy Council.
